Laser Hair Removal: Is it right for me?
One of the most common questions I get asked by clients considering hair removal is “Is it permanent?” and “how many sessions will I need”. Both of these questions are difficult to answer as there are many different influencing factors when it comes to treating clients, so I’d like to unpick some of these questions.
We have been helping clients remove unwanted hair for over 40 years, and we have learnt that honesty is one of the most, if not the most important factors for clients. With our experience and training, we know that our treatments have been proven and will give our clients the best outcome. Here I am going to concentrate on explaining laser hair removal.
How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
Laser hair removal targets the pigment (melanin) in hair. The laser’s heat damages the follicle, reducing its ability to regrow hair. Over a series of treatments, many follicles are either destroyed or significantly weakened. The hair must be in its active (anagen) growth phase for the treatment to be successful, which is why multiple treatments are needed in specific time frames.
How Long Does It Really Last?
Laser hair removal offers long-lasting hair reduction, but it is not considered 100% permanent, unlike electrolysis. After completing a recommended course of treatments (usually 8-10 sessions), most clients experience a 70–90% reduction in hair growth in the treated area.
Some hair follicles may be permanently reduced, while others may regrow finer, lighter, and slower over time.
Maintenance May Be Needed
Hair regrowth can be influenced by factors such as hormones, age, genetics, and medical conditions; therefore, maintenance sessions may be necessary
- Underarms, legs, and bikini line: These areas usually respond very well and can remain hair-free for extended periods.
- Face and hormonal areas (e.g. upper lip, chin, chest) usually require more frequent maintenance due to hormonal influences.
Common Myths About Laser Hair Removal
“It’s permanent after one session.”
False: Multiple sessions are required to catch all hair in its growth cycle.
“Once the hair is gone, it never comes back.”
False: While the treated follicles may be permanently reduced, hormonal changes can trigger new growth elsewhere.
“It works well on all hair types and skin tones.”
True & False!: Our Motus AY laser is safe and effective for all skin types, but results vary based on hair colour, thickness, and skin type. The hair must contain enough pigment for the treatment to be effective.
