If your skin is breaking out, red, sore, sensitive or has scarring from acne, it can be really difficult to know what to book.
I see this a lot in the clinic. Clients often come in saying, “I don’t know whether I need a facial, microneedling, something for acne, something for redness, or whether my skin is too sensitive to do anything at all.”
This is exactly why a consultation is so important.
Acne, rosacea, sensitive or reactive skin can sometimes look similar, but they are not the same thing. They do not all need the same treatment, and they definitely should not all be treated aggressively.
The right skin treatment depends on what your skin is doing now, what has happened to it in the past, genetics, what products you are using at home, and what result you are hoping for.
At Hough Green Clinic in Chester, we do not want you guessing. We assess your skin by touch and feel, talk it through with you, and build a personal skin plan that slots easily into your day to day life and most importantly is tailored to your skin.
The Simple Way I Explain It
If your skin is actively inflamed, breaking out or sore, we need to calm and support it first.
If your main concern is rosacea, redness or flushing, we need to think about the skin barrier, triggers, sensitivity and long-term management.
If your concern is acne scarring, texture or uneven skin, we usually need to wait until active breakouts are under control before moving into treatments such as microneedling or RF microneedling.
If your skin is sensitive, tight, stinging or easily irritated, then the first step is often not “more treatment”. It is usually barrier repair, hydration and a paired back plan.
That is the difference.
It is not about choosing the strongest treatment. It is about choosing the right treatment at the right time.
Why Guessing Often Makes Skin Worse
When your skin is not happy, it is very tempting to keep adding things.
A stronger cleanser. A harsher exfoliant. More acids. More retinol. More masks. More spot treatments.
I understand why people do it, because when your skin feels out of your control, you naturally want to do something. But often, by the time clients come to us, their skin is not just breaking out. It is also irritated, dry, inflamed and exhausted.
This is especially common with acne-prone and rosacea-prone skin. The skin may already be inflamed, so pushing it harder can make it more reactive.
That is why we usually look at the whole picture.
What are you cleansing with?
Are you exfoliating too much?
Is your barrier compromised?
Are you using prescription skincare or antibiotics?
Are you reacting to products? Does your skin flare with stress, heat, alcohol, certain foods, exercise or weather changes?
The treatment is only one part of the plan. What you do at home matters just as much.
If Your Main Concern Is Active Acne
If you are having active breakouts, inflamed spots, blackheads, blocked pores or oily congestion, we need to focus on calming inflammation, supporting the barrier and helping the skin function more predictably.
The first step is usually not microneedling or an aggressive treatment. If the skin is actively inflamed, we need to get that under better control first.
In clinic, this may involve a combination of professional facial treatments, Dermaviduals homecare and practical advice around your routine. We may also talk about hormones, stress, lifestyle, nutrition and any medication you are using, because all of these can influence the skin.
For acne-prone skin, consistency is really important. Skin won’t change overnight, it takes time and consistency. A good acne plan needs time, patience and review, rather than constantly changing products every week.
If Your Main Concern Is Rosacea or Redness
Rosacea-prone skin needs a very different approach from acne-prone skin, even though the two can sometimes look similar.
With rosacea, clients often describe flushing, redness, heat, sensitivity, stinging, dryness or little bumps that look a bit like acne. The skin can feel unpredictable, and many people become nervous about trying anything new because they have reacted badly in the past.
This is where we need to be gentle.
For rosacea-prone or very red skin, I am usually thinking about calming inflammation, strengthening the skin barrier, reducing unnecessary irritation and helping you understand your triggers. Sun exposure, heat, stress, alcohol, spicy foods, skincare and weather changes can all be relevant for some people, although triggers vary from person to person.
BYONIK can be a lovely option for this type of skin because it is supportive rather than harsh. It is designed to hydrate, calm and support the skin without downtime, which makes it a useful starting point when the skin feels reactive or depleted.
Rosacea is not something we talk about as a quick fix, it is more about long-term management, helping the skin become calmer and more predictable.
If Your Main Concern Is Acne Scarring
Acne scarring is different from active acne.
This is something I explain a lot, because clients often want to treat breakouts and scarring at the same time. Sometimes we can support both in stages, but if the skin is still actively breaking out, we usually need to calm that first before moving into scar-focused treatments.
For acne scarring, we are usually looking at texture changes in the skin. This might be pitted scarring, uneven skin, enlarged pores, rough texture or marks left behind after breakouts.
Microneedling and RF microneedling can be useful here because they encourage the skin’s natural repair response and support collagen production. These treatments are more active than a calming facial, so they need to be timed properly.
If your skin is still very inflamed, sore or reactive, we may not start with scar treatment straight away. That does not mean scarring cannot be treated. It simply means we want to get the skin into a better place first, so it responds well and heals properly.
With scarring, results are gradual. It is not usually one treatment and done. We are working with the structure and quality of the skin, so a course is normally recommended.
If Your Skin Is Sensitive, Tight or Easily Irritated
Sensitive skin needs respect and time.
If your skin stings when you apply products, feels tight after cleansing, reacts easily, goes red quickly or feels like everything makes it worse, then we need to slow things down.
This is where I often talk about the skin barrier. Your barrier is there to protect you. When it is compromised, the skin can become dry, reactive, inflamed and uncomfortable. In that situation, strong treatments are not always helpful straight away.
For sensitive skin, the first step may be a very simple homecare routine, Dermaviduals barrier support and gentle in-clinic treatments such as BYONIK. The goal is to make the skin feel calmer and stronger before we ask more of it.
A lot of clients with sensitive skin have been told they need to exfoliate more, peel more or dry the skin out. In reality, the majority of skin needs the opposite. They need their skin to be supported to give it its strength back so that it can function properly.
Where BYONIK Fits In
BYONIK is often one of my favourite starting points for skin that is stressed, dry, reactive, inflamed or rosacea-prone.
It is not a harsh treatment. It is designed to support the skin, hydrate, calm and improve comfort without the downtime associated with more active procedures.
This can be especially helpful if your skin is not ready for microneedling, or anything too stimulating. It can also be a good option before or alongside other treatments as part of a wider skin plan.
Clients often choose BYONIK when their skin feels tired, irritated, dull, dehydrated or unsettled. It is also a good option when someone wants visible freshness and brightening
Where Dermaviduals Fits In
Dermaviduals is very useful when we need to work on the skin barrier and create a homecare plan that is specific to you.
This is important because your treatment in the clinic is only part of the result. If you are using products at home that are too harsh, too active or not right for your skin, we may struggle to get things settled.
With acne, rosacea and sensitivity, the homecare routine needs to be realistic. It should not be complicated for the sake of it. I would rather you use a few suitable products consistently than have a bathroom shelf full of products that are irritating your skin.
Dermaviduals allows us to personalise the support depending on whether your skin is dry, oily, congested, inflamed, sensitive or compromised.
Where Microneedling and RF Microneedling Fit In
Microneedling and RF microneedling are more active treatments, and they are usually chosen when we are working on texture, acne scarring, enlarged pores, fine lines or skin quality.
They are not usually my first choice for someone whose skin is very inflamed, sore or actively breaking out. In that case, we would usually calm the skin first.
Once the skin is ready, microneedling can be a very useful treatment for encouraging repair and collagen stimulation. RF microneedling goes a step further by combining microneedling with radiofrequency energy, which can be helpful for scarring, texture and firmness.
These treatments need a proper plan. There may be redness afterwards, and the result builds gradually over time. If you are looking for improvement in acne scarring or uneven texture, patience is important.
Where Venus Freeze or HIFU May Fit In
Venus Freeze and HIFU are not usually the first treatments I would think of for active acne or rosacea. They are more relevant when the concern is firmness, laxity, skin tightening, fine lines or a crepey texture.
Venus Freeze is a comfortable radiofrequency treatment that feels warm and relaxing, with no downtime for clients. It can be lovely when the skin is looking less firm or less smooth, but it is not a treatment for active inflamed breakouts.
HIFU is more focused on lifting and tightening, so again, it depends on the concern. If someone comes in worried about acne scarring, for example, RF microneedling may be more relevant than HIFU. If the concern is laxity or mild sagging, HIFU may be part of the conversation.
This is why we do not just choose treatments from a menu. We match the treatment to the skin.
Why We Treat in Stages
A staged plan is often the best approach for acne, rosacea, scarring and sensitive skin.
If you have active acne and scarring, we usually need to calm the active acne before focusing fully on the scars.
If you have rosacea and sensitivity, we may need to strengthen the barrier before using anything more active.
If your skin is dehydrated and inflamed, we may start with hydration and calming before moving into collagen-stimulating treatments.
This does not mean delaying results unnecessarily. It means creating a plan your skin can actually tolerate.
Good skin treatment is not about doing everything at once. It is about knowing what to do first.
What Happens at a Skin Consultation?
At your consultation, we look at your skin properly and talk through what has been happening.
I will usually want to know:
- how long the concern has been there
- what products you are using
- whether you are using prescription skincare, antibiotics or acne medication
- whether your skin reacts easily
- what treatments you have tried before
- whether your skin flares with heat, stress, food, alcohol, weather or hormones
- what result you are hoping for
- Some questions about your diet and lifestyle
This helps us decide whether your skin needs calming, clearing, strengthening, resurfacing or collagen stimulation.
It also helps us be honest. Some skins need a gentle start. Some are ready for more active work. Some need medical support alongside clinic treatments. Some need their homecare simplified before we do anything else.
What I Would Avoid Before Your Appointment
If your skin is already irritated, try not to start lots of new products just before your consultation.
Avoid strong exfoliants, scrubs, acids, retinoids or peels unless you have already been advised to use them. Do not pick or squeeze spots if you can help it, as this can increase inflammation and the risk of marks or scarring.
It is also helpful to bring photos of your skin on a bad day, especially if your redness or breakouts come and go. And if you can, bring a list or photo of the skincare products you are currently using. This gives us a much clearer picture.
So, Which Skin Treatment Is Right for You?
If your skin is actively breaking out, we may start with acne support, calming facials and homecare.
If your skin is red, flushing or rosacea-prone, we may start with barrier support, BYONIK and trigger guidance.
If your skin is scarred or uneven after acne, we may look at microneedling or RF microneedling once the skin is calm enough.
If your skin is sensitive, tight or stinging, we may start by repairing and supporting the barrier before anything more active.
And if you have a mixture of concerns, which many people do, we will prioritise. We will decide what needs doing first, what can wait, and what will give your skin the best chance of improving comfortably.
