How Long Does Laser Hair Removal Last? Truth vs Myths

One of the most common questions are asked by prospective laser hair removal clients is “is it permanent ?  and a quick search of the internet will reveal a whole raft of mixed messages—some claim it is permanent, while others insist the hair comes back. At Hough Green Clinic, we believe in clear, honest advice, which is backed up by science and our years of laser experience.

  1. Understanding How Laser Hair Removal Works

Laser hair removal targets the pigment (melanin) in hair follicles. The laser’s heat damages the follicle, reducing its ability to regrow hair. Over a series of treatments, the follicles are either destroyed or significantly weakened.

Hair grows in cycles and only the active growth phase (anagen) responds well to laser treatment. This is why multiple sessions are necessary for optimal results.

  1. How Long Does It Really Last?
  • Long-Term Hair Reduction

Laser hair removal offers long-lasting hair reduction, but it is not considered 100% permanent and results vary greatly between clients, due to multiple factors. After completing a recommended course of treatments (usually 10-12 sessions), most clients experience a 70–90% reduction in hair growth in the treated area.  This also varies in the area treated.  For example leg hair is much more predictable, whereas hormonal hair growth will need considerably more treatments over a longer period of time.

Some follicles may be permanently disabled, while others may regrow finer, lighter, and slower over time.

  • Maintenance Will Be Required

Regrowth is influenced by factors such as hormones, age, genetics, and medical conditions. As such, maintenance sessions may be necessary to maintain smooth, hair-free skin.

  • Different Areas, Different Results
  • Underarms, legs, and bikini line: Often respond very well and can remain hair-free for extended periods.
  • Face and hormonal areas (e.g. upper lip, chin, nipples) will require more frequent maintenance due to hormonal influences.
  1. Common Myths About Laser Hair Removal

           “It’s permanent after one session.”

Truth: Multiple sessions are required to catch all hair in its growth cycle.

“Once the hair is gone, it never comes back.”

Truth: While the treated follicles may be disabled, hormonal changes can trigger new growth elsewhere.

“It works equally well on all hair types and skin tones.”

Truth: Laser technology has advanced, but it will only work if there is enough melanin/pigment in the hair follicle.   We are able to safely treat all skin types results with our laser device.
